Unit 2—Video Reflection Essay on Food Inc.: Purpose: When you complete the tasks indicated in this assignment, you will have demonstrated to me that you understand the materials presented thus far for this unit. Audience: I, your instructor, am your primary audience for this essay. Please remember that you are writing for me to find out what you have learned so far. Watch two documentaries: a) “Food, Inc.” available at the Valencia library (on reserve) or Netflix, if you have subscription. Released in 2009 and dubbed into more than 10 languages worldwide, “Food Inc.” is a 95-minute awardwinning documentary that explores today’s fast food culture and the inside story of food industry in the U.S. b) “NOW” with PBS—an interview with the film director, Robert Kenner at: http://video.pbs.org/video/1143263943/ After watching both documentaries, write an essay (with an intro, a body and a conclusion) addressing the following questions: i. Is there a moral issue in “processing” animals so human beings can have “enough” food? Why? ii. Is there an ethical issue in “processing” animals so human beings can have “more” food? Why? iii. Is the information in the films news to you? What is your opinion on the close relationship between Monsanto executives and policy makers? iv. This unit is about culture. Compare the general food culture in the U.S. to that of your family (a sub-culture) with respect to the norms (how we consume food) and values (what we believe about food). v. Be sure to incorporate at least five terms that you have learned in Unit (2).
