Now that you know about the complexity in decision-making for kids who require AAC, analyze a video.   Please watch this AAC Video

Some of the traps to avoid when speaking with individuals who use SGDs are:

Asking yes/no questions

Talking too much

Failing to provide wait time

Providing few opportunities to respond

Being unfamiliar with the communication system or app

Please discuss your observations of the parents' interactions with their child during the interaction at the restaurant. Did they effectively communicate with their daughter? Why or why not?

Also discuss the child's communication. How would you rate her operational competence? How would you rate her communicative competence?

Based on this observation, does her SGD allow her to functionally communicate? Why or why not?

RESPOND TO THIS DISCUSSION PERSONS DISCUSSION POST IN THREE TO 3 SENTENCES

I think this particular example of communication was really effective in terms of ACC. The parents avoid asking yes/no questions but still asked questions that were very direct, it was always clear what they were asking of her, and she seemed to always know how to respond. They also gave her ample time to think of her answer and respond, they never pressure her or ask too many questions while they are waiting for a response. When neither of the parents could hear her drink order they had asked her to turn in louder, instead of just saying "what", again being very direct about what they wanted from her. Further, both parents seemed to understand how her communication app worked, and how to use it, especially in a setting such as restaurant. In this specific example, the daughter seemed confident in using her app to communicate her order to the waiter instead of ordering for her, which shows she herself and the parents were confident and comfortable with the use of tablet in various settings. This is a prime example of how SGD, when used and understood properly, can provide individuals with communication difficulties more opportunities to be independent and communicate with the world around them.
