Elastic and Inelastic.  Please respond to the following:

  • Provide three examples of inelastic traffic not discussed in the text and validate their inclusion as inelastic.
  • Analyze the characteristics of elastic traffic to determine why this is used on the Internet.

Classmates:

Provide three examples of inelastic traffic not discussed in the text and validate their inclusion as inelastic.

Elastic traffic can adjust, over wide ranges, to changes in delay and throughput across an Internet and still meet the needs of its applications. This is the traditional type of traffic supported on TCP/IP based Internet. SMTP for example consider elastic traffic because it does not get effected by delay or throughput. Telnet and HTTP traffic are also considered elastic traffic; web pages are not sensitive to delay.

Inelastic traffic does not easily adapt, if at all, to changes in delay and throughput across the Internet. The prime example is real-time traffic, such as voice and video.

Video conferencing uses two-way traffic for streaming and needs high bandwidth throughout the session. Stock trading considered inelastic traffic because it requires real-time experience and cannot be delayed. Voice over IP (VoIP) is another example of inelastic traffic, it requires a dedicated high speed bandwidth to not interrupt the call.

Analyze the characteristics of elastic traffic to determine why this is used on the Internet

Elastic traffic is not sensitive to delay; it can spread in time. This kind of traffic is associated with applications that send their data using TCP protocol. They are applications such as FTP, WWW and email. They direct to transport protocol a continuous set of data and the transmission rate of this data depends on transport protocol mechanisms and network conditions. Because this transmission does not have time borders, it does not have to meet real time conditions. Because real time conditions don’t have to be met, elastic traffic is invulnerable to delays. It also doesn’t have minimum bandwidth requirements. Because of that, the Internet session for those applications will not be dropped because of the delay and users will get to their desired page when browsing the web whether in one second or ten.

TCP elastic traffic is used in the Internet, such as web browsing, peer-to-peer file sharing, ftp, e-mail and other. These applications are built on top of TCP, which provides reliable transfers and adjusts the sending rate to the network conditions to achieve the maximum possible throughput, a feature that makes TCP flows to be called elastic.
