Students need to contribute three substantive posts in this discussion by the due date indicated. The substantive posts can be any combination of responses and replies.

A work center is an area in a business in which productive resources are organized and work is completed. Having resources of time, materials, tools and manpower in the right place at the right time is critical to the efficient and effective creation of a product or service for sale to a customer. We learned in week 1 about the importance of process flow and how to depict the flow on a flowchart.

Resources of time, materials, tools and manpower are allocated throughout the various work centers. The objectives of work center scheduling are to (1) meet due dates, (2) minimize lead time, (3) minimize setup time or cost, (4) minimize work-in-process inventory, and (5) maximize machine or labor utilization. It is unlikely, and often undesirable, to simultaneously satisfy these objectives.

After identifying the process flow in a work center you are familiar with,

1. Allocating jobs, equipment, and personnel to work centers

2. Sequence order performance

3. Dispatching jobs for the best efficiency you can achieve
