W5 SHORT PAPER

Often in a healthcare organization the quality director is also the chair of the quality council or committee. This committee reviews all quality data from the facility and membership on this committee is composed of nursing staff, ancillary department staff (such as radiology and laboratory) and medical staff. In the situation below, the medical chief of staff, while wanting to be a participating member, have viable concerns and questions. This individual stands to be a valuable ally provided they understand the importance of physician quality review and can share this information with clinician colleagues. How will you respond? Prompt: You are the newly elected chair of your healthcare facility’s Quality Improvement Council. One of the voting members is the newly elected chief of staff. This physician wants to be supportive of the council’s quality efforts but admits to you that she and the medical staff, the majority of whom have been practicing for 20 years or more at said facility, really do not grasp the importance of physician quality review or how providers have an effect on HCAHPS scores. In this short paper, lay out how you would approach discussing the importance of physician quality review with the chief of staff. Provide graphs and examples of how you would persuade the council into making the most beneficial decisions. Three links are provided below that might assist you. CMS COPs for Hospitals OPPE Rochester (see page 12) OPPE and FPPE Guidelines for Submission: The short paper should follow these formatting guidelines: 2–4 pages in length, double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and citations in APA format.
