This article further built upon the thesis of W. D. Snodgrass who interpreted the short story to be about capitalism. Watkins, the author of the scholarly article I found, believed that labor and religion were also important themes in the short story. I found that this article was interesting because those two themes were mainly based off the character of the gardener. Overall, I never thought that the short story was based on capitalism. It was very refreshing to read a different interpretation of the short story.
