We have discussed the Judeo-Christian understanding of creation as described in Genesis 1–2. For this discussion post, we will bring the reflection closer to home and get philosophical about our own e
As a reminder, throughout this course, I will present you with a work of art that relates to what we will be discussing. I will call this an "art lectio." In an "art lectio," I will invite you to reflect upon the piece of art, read a corresponding scripture passage, read a corresponding commentary on the art (when possible), and offer your reflections in a journal entry via Canvas. This journal entry will only be read by me, so you can be as open or as private as you like. I ask that your journal entry demonstrate your thoughtful reflection on the piece, even if you choose to make it more reserved.
For this module, we will make a slight adjustment to the art lectio assignment. Instead of viewing a painting, in this module, you will listen to two pieces of music and reflect upon the pieces in a journal entry. Please follow the instructions below:
- Listen to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ “Andante Festivo.” Minimize VideoStart by contemplating the music. Just listen to the piece and take it in. What images does the music inspire in your mind? How does the music make you feel? How would you describe the piece?
- Read the corresponding commentary on Sibelius’ “Andante Festivo,” by Alex Burns.
- Listen once more to the piece by Sibelius (linked above). As you listen a second time, return to the previous questions: What images does the music inspire in your mind? How does the music make you feel? How would you describe the piece?
- Respond: Now it’s time to write your first journal entry for this assignment. Your entry should be 4-5 sentences or bullets that express complete thoughts. For this assignment I’d like you to share some of the reflections you had when working through the Sibelius portion of the "art lectio" process.
- Next, listen to the an excerpt of the first movement of Polish composer Henryk Gorecki’s “Symphony No. 4”.listen from the 0:00 to 4:55 mark). Contemplate the music. Just listen to the piece and take it in. What images does the music inspire in your mind? How does the music make you feel? How would you describe the piece?
- Read the corresponding commentary on Gorecki’s “Symphony No. 4,” by Tom Huizenga.
- Listen once more to the excerpt of the piece by Gorecki (linked in number 6 above). As you listen a second time, return to the previous questions: What images does the music inspire in your mind? How does the music make you feel? How would you describe the piece?
- Respond: Now it’s time to write your second journal entry for this assignment. Your entry should be 4-5 sentences or bullets that express complete thoughts. Please add the second entry as a separate paragraph in the same document as your first entry. For this part of the assignment, I’d like you to share some of the reflections you had when working through the Gorecki portion of the "art lectio" process.
