Week 4: Discussion - Conflict Management
Review the following scenario:
You are talking to a colleague who holds a different view on a subject important to you. Not wanting the colleague to dominate the conversation, you start with a passionate statement of your belief, supported by evidence and strong arguments. You are confident that your explanation, with all the facts on your side, is bound to persuade your colleague to change her mind on the subject.
However, the conversation becomes heated. Your colleague, with equal passion, tells you that you do not know what you are talking about. You realize that she has not been listening to you at all. You conclude that you will not be able to get through to her on this subject because she just does not listen. The conversation ends with both of you walking away in disgust.
Based on your analysis of the scenario, respond to the following:
- What are the barriers to communication that have caused this situation?
- What is "feedback" and what is its value in the process of motivation and communication?
- How could you apply Thomas and Kilmann’s Two-Dimensional Taxonomy of Conflict-Handling Modes to this scenario?
Give reasons to support your statements.
Write your initial response in approximately 200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
Also, include at least two professional/scholarly sources with your answer. Part of graduate school is the ability to locate/incorporate valid research to strengthen your position on a particular question.
