Welcome onboard to the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) Catering, we are glad to have you on board. Traditionally, we have had one event size for academic departments: maximum 270 guests (the size of our off-site banquet hall). However, we have received a lot of requests for events that are half that size and are considering adding a 135 guest event standard to our regular product offerings. Thus, we would like you to give us some recommendations on how to staff this new 135 guest product line.
As you know, we deliver prepared meals to our off-site banquet hall, using our delivery vans. Please note that we plan to use 4 delivery vans for this new event size to have capacity for the 135 meals. So, assume that the number of vans is fixed at 4, and just review the on-site service of dinners.
For serving 135 dinners we estimate our production function to be Q = (1/30)(U2)(S2)(D1/2), where U is unskilled labor (wait staff) that we pay an hourly wage of $8, and S is skilled labor (staff managers) that we pay an hourly wage of $40, and D is delivery vans (fixed at 4 vans).
Please let me know how many unskilled wait staff (U) and how many skilled staff managers (S) to employ in our 135 event production scheme to minimize costs.
