Welcome to Week 1 of CHM/110 Introductory Chemistry! This course uses a variety of learning resources to help you develop an understanding of introductory chemistry. Each week, there will be a plan to help you understand how to use those resources. After you read the plan, answer the question at the end to tell your faculty member how you are feeling as you start the week. There are no right or wrong answers, so be honest!

Week 1 introduces you to the fundamentals of chemistry, beginning with the states of matter. The information covered this week will help you understand the ways matter works at the atomic scale. Knowing how matter interacts in the world allows you to be better informed about product contents and recalls, as well as current events in energy, technology, and the environment.

Here is what you need to do this week:

  1. Read Ch. 1, “Portable Electronics: The Periodic Table in the Palm of Your Hand,” (approx. 28 pages) from Chemistry in Context: Applying Chemistry to Society.
  2. Read Ch. 2, “The Air We Breathe,” (approx. 42 pages) from Chemistry in Context: Applying Chemistry to Society.
  3. Read Ch. 4, “Climate Change,” (approx. 40 pages) from Chemistry in Context: Applying Chemistry to Society.
  4. After completing the learning activities, take the Review Quiz (22 questions) to check your understanding. You can attempt the quiz as many times as you would like to earn your highest score possible.
  5. Complete the Summative Assessment: States of Matter: Basics Simulation and submit the document.
  6. Preview the Summative Assessments due in Weeks 2 and 5, and plan accordingly.
  7. Don’t forget to respond to the discussion about states of matter, and complete your follow-up responses throughout the week, as usual!
