What are four types of biomes?

Desert, Tropical Rain Forest, Tundra, and Temperate Grassland

Any biome is defined primarily by temperature and precipitation. This will then determine vegetation, which will subsequently lead to the success of other organisms.

Other common terrestrial biomes include:

  • Tropical Grassland (Savanna)
  • Taiga
  • Temperate Forest
  • Coniferous Forest
  • Alpine
  • Chaparral
  • Polar

There are variants and sub-divisions of all of these. Some biomes are very selective and exist in tiny, isolated parts of the planet (see: paramo).

One way that ecologists classify biomes is by looking at a graph called a climatogram (below). Graphs with similar shapes and structures will be classified as the same type of biome, despite being located in different parts of the world with similar but different of flora and fauna:
