QUESTION

What are some examples of parallel evolution?

Parallel evolution occurs when allopatric (geographically separated) interdependently develop a similar trait.

This can occur in plant and animal species.

Animalia- Many examples can be drawn from the independent evolution of Placental Mammals and Australian Marsupials. During the Jurassic period mammals were small and low in diversity, unable to exploit many of the ecosystem resources due to treat of predation from dinosaurs.

At the end of the Cretaceous Period when the dinosaurs were extinct various landmass had split forming distinct geographical borders.

The absence of competition for resources and less threat from predators allowed mammals the exploit the environment and in-turn develop more specific niece dedicated lifestyles.

Below is a list of some of the species which independently began to exploit specific niches and developed similar traits in order to be successful. These are all examples of Parallel Evolution.
