The main types of are fats, oils, waxes, phospholipids and steroids.

Fats are solid at room temperature. Some examples would be butter, chicken fat, cream and cheese. They are mostly found in meat and dairy products.

Oils are actually unsaturated fats that are liquid at room temperature such as corn oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, you name it.

Waxes are found on the epidermis of leaves, fruits and even seeds of some plants. They prevent water loss and infections by pathogens. Sebum that is excreted from sebaceous glands contains wax that softens our skin.

Phospholipids are important components of the plasma membrane.

Steroids include cholesterol and certain hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
