What are your thoughts

Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) also known as a stroke happens when the supply of the blood into the brain is block (Falkner & Green). Blockage can be from a bleeding or blood clot in the brain. Brain cannot store oxygen and brain cells need constant supply of oxygen to function effectively. Lack of oxygen supply in the affected area causes the brain cells to die that affects a person’s functionality including the ability to talk, make judgements, safe mobility, swallowing, elimination problems etc. FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech problems, and Time to call 9-1-1) is the acronym use to determine if a person is having a stroke. Knowing the warning signs and when to call for help is critical in saving and determining the prognosis of a person suffering a stroke (American Stroke Association, 2020).

Understanding and controlling the risks decreases the chance of having a stroke. Working with health care professional in managing and controlling conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol heart diseases (CAD, A-fib), and diabetes prevent stroke (CDC, 2020). Modifying lifestyle such as quit smoking and decrease alcohol intake, follow a heart healthy diet (fruits, vegetables, low salt intake), regular physical activity and maintaining weight is one way of promoting health and preventing stroke (CDC, 2020). Providing educational resources and collaborating with different health care agencies such as stroke rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy and occupational therapy in providing continuity of care services and support for long term recovery after a stroke is crucial in regaining functionality. Educational resources will help stroke patient make healthy lifestyle choices to promote healthy living.
