What are your thoughts
Due to the diversities in ethnic and cultural backgrounds, different populations have varying health beliefs and practices. The increased incidences of high blood pressure among other lifestyle-related illnesses have resulted in deteriorated health of many citizens in the united states. high blood pressure is among the heart-related illnesses that is characterized by narrowing of the blood arteries. Moreover, the more the blood that the blood pumps and the higher the resistance to blood flow in the arteries the higher the blood pressure. Even though high blood pressure has no definite and identifiable symptoms, individuals can live for several years without heart issues. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. According to Singh, Shankar, and Singh (2017), more than 7.5 million deaths occur annually due to high blood pressure globally. By 2025, it is predicted that there will be an escalating number of high blood pressure adults estimating to be more than 1.56 billion individuals (Singh, Shankar, & Singh, 2017). an individual is considered to have a normal high blood pressure if their systolic and diastolic levels are < 120mmHg and < 80 mmHg respectively. However, an individual is considered to have high blood pressure if the systolic and diastolic BP levels are ≥140 mmHg and ≥ 90 mmHg respectively (National Institutes of Health, 2020).
The development, adoption, and implementation of appropriate interventions to prevent high blood pressure would be necessary to promote the health of the population. Being a lifestyle-related illness, there is a need to encourage the patient and the population to eat a healthy diet. Increasing educational awareness to best nutritional practices will help in the prevention and management of hypertensive patients. Dietary practices that include taking less amount of sodium, taking high levels of potassium, more fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains would significantly assist in the prevention of high blood pressure (National Institutes of Health, 2020). In addition, embracing regular physical exercises could also help in maintaining a healthy weight and hence lower the blood pressure. Kitt, Fox, Tucker, and McManus (2019) indicate that it would be appropriate to engage in moderate-intensity aerobic exercise at least 2 and a half hours per week, or vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise for 1 hour and 15 minutes per week. Alcohol consumption should also be avoided since alcohol adds extra calories to the body which adds the human body weight. Stress management and smoking cessation are also some social interventions that would lead to a healthy heart. Some of the stress management activities that could be embraced include exercising, meditation, yoga and listening to music. Regular high blood pressure testing and screening could also help in early identification of the identifiable signs and symptoms.
