What do the prefix nimbo- and the suffix -nimbus mean?
"Nimbus", Latin for "dark cloud", refers to clouds that produce precipitation.
The clouds are not really dark. Rather, precipitation is associated with a heavy accumulation of clouds. Within such an accumulation, the precipitation comes from lower clouds that appear dark because higher clouds block 's light.
