So first you set up 85 to be divided by 5 by using that division notation. Then, you start with the 8 by saying '8 divided by 5'. That gives 1 with a remainder of 3. You place the 1 above the notation over the 8. You then multiply this 1 by the 5 outside the notation. This gives 5 which you place under the 8. You then subtract this 5 from 8 to give 3 which you write below. Bring down the 5 in 85 down to meet the 3. Side by side they make 35. Then do a new round of division using this 35 and the 5 outside the notation. So say '35 divided by 5' and that gives 7 with no remainder. Place this 7 above the notation right along side the 1. This together makes 17. Then you multiply the 7 by 5 as before. This gives 35 which is subtracted below from itself. The answer of zero means that there is no remainder and so 5 divides 85 exactly.
