Which in rough terms asserts the behavior of men and women is governed by the stereotypes of their social roles. An example of this would be Males developed traits that manifest agency. Agency relates to traits such as the inclination to be independent, assertive, and competent. Boys on the other hand, learn to be more aggressive, which is more in tune with their more instrumental role.

For women, they develop traits that manifest communal or expressive behavior, which inhibits their aggression. Communal traits entail the tendency to be friendly, unselfish, and expressive.

Agency is the capacity for humans to make choices and to impose those choices on the world around them. So for example the stereotypical male trait such as independence would be an agentic trait.
