What is genetic equilibrium?
genetic equilibrium is defined as relative equilibrium in ratio of genes and alleles in a population(gene pool).
a gene pool is defined as total aggregate of genes and their alleles in a non-evolving population...
when we say non-evolving population, it means that there is no change in respective gene and allele frequency from generation to generation....hence, the population is in genetic equilibrium...
where as on the other hand, if we see an evolving population,i.e., a population which is not in genetic equilibrium, the frequency of alleles and genes change from generation to generation ...it can be due to any reason such as genetic drift, non-random mating etc...
note that if a population is in genetic equilibrium, hard-weinberg eq. can be applied to it which is, ##(p+q)^2=p^2+2pq+q^2## where, p=frequency of dominant allele q=frequency of recessive allele ##p^2=##frequency of homozygous dominant individuals ##pq=##frequency of heterozygous individuals ##q^2=##frequency of homozygous recessive individuals
