What is the difference between empire, imperialism, and colonialism?

What is the difference between empire, imperialism, and colonialism? Please define these terms and give one historical example of each. Do you think that colonialism and capitalism are connected in any way to the rise of racism in modern Europe, or do you think they are completely unrelated?
