What is the manager's perspective of leadership? How does it differ from the leader's perspective?

What is the manager’s perspective of leadership?  How does it differ from the leader’s perspective?

Managers focus on process, procedure, and implementation of the organization’s purpose.  A manager's perspective is about getting the job done and keeping stability.  The leader is about change and moving workers toward the organization's vision.

The area of overlap comes in terms of the need to use “soft or people skills” to get their job done.  It can be said that:

The manager motivates while the leader empowers.

In the following five quotes each leader is commenting on the perspective of a manager in an organization as opposed to a leader.

Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.Peter Drucker

Leadership is working with goals and vision; management is working with objectives.Rusell Honore

When a management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for bad economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact.Warren Buffett

Good management is the art of making problems so interesting and their solutions so constructive that everyone wants to get to work and deal with them.Paul Hawken

Management is nothing more than motivating other people.Lee Iacocca

NOTE: For this activity you will be forced to argue for one perspective or the other. (Again, even if you do not actually agree, you must argue for the position you have been assigned!)

Your last names beings with a letter from K-Z, you will present arguments for why managers must be leaders and decision-makers, if they are to ensure the completion of specific objectives.

Addressing Theme 1 by:

Addressing Theme 2 by:

      1. Presenting your respective case--last name A-H: managers are not leaders; last K-Z: managers must be leaders--describing at least three reasons why you believe so.

You must include at least five in-text citations and three references in your initial post.

Your initial post is due by Thursday 11:59 p.m. EST.

NOTE: For this response part of the activity you will respond to two classmates who took the opposite position.  Therefore, if you argued that managers are not leaders, you will respond to two classmates who argued that managers are leaders. (Thus, if your last name begins with a letter A-H, you will respond to someone whose last name begins with a letter K-Z, and vice versa).

Provide follow-up responses to at least two of your classmates by:

  1. Evaluating the most convincing point made for the counter-perspective.
  2. Evaluating the least convincing point made for the counter-perspective.
  3. Offering specific suggestions about how your classmate could have made a more convincing argument.

You must include at least two in-text citations and one reference in each response.
