Glycolysis is the first step of cellular respiration. This process breaks down glucose into two pyruvic acids, this process occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell and produces 2 atp and 2 NADH.

Following glycolysis, which occurs in the cytoplasm, outside of the mitochondrion, the rest of cellular respiration occurs inside of the mitochondrion.
