Why didn't Indians unite against the British in the Sepoy Mutiny?

At the time of Sepoy Mutiny Indians were not properly connected and may due to illiteracy,ignorance and lack of political awareness which affected their behavior, so Indians not unite and dethrone.

One can understand the nature of Indian society- even after many years say 170 years; there is hardly attempt to remove illiteracy. And so much poverty hence change and fight for won't take place that easily.
