Our focus this week is on the intersection between cultural values and medical values and the tensions that may result. This week, please think about how medical professionals, given their professional duties, should respond to cases of conflicting values. The story excerpts from The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down speak to some of the difficulties providers can have balancing their different duties as professionals. Also, consider the importance of patient autonomy. Yes, children are involved in many of these cases, but parents have a measure of "parental autonomy" regarding the raising of their children.  What does it mean to respect patient values in such cases?  

These are sometimes tough issues, but we live in one of the most culturally diverse places in the U.S.. There's lots to celebrate. It's easy to see that diversity throughout our health care systems .  Please remember to show respect for one another in this discussion, keeping in mind the diverse values, religions and cultures in this class.  Thank you!
