Write 1 page thesis on the topic an ethical dilemma in alumaarc company. An ethical dilemma There is an ethical dilemma involving a controversial issue of safety compromise for increased output production by the workers in AlumaArc Company. Conner is an ambassador of safety in the company and advocate for safety precautions for the workers. A safe workplace is crucial for the health and well being of workers. But as it seems in this scenario, the managers on the top level management involved in decision making, prefer increased output to safety precautions. It can be tricky in such a case whereby AlumaArc was requested to step up their efforts in production by the US army (Scott and Donald 20).
Connor is almost at loggerheads with his fellow employees including the General Manager whom he fears may fire him for trying to challenge the incentives put in place. These incentives are aimed at increasing production but they seem to cause workers to get worn out and at risk. It is imperative to discuss what Conner can do in such a scenario. If Conner can allow his workers to ignore the safety protocol so as to increase production in meeting the required output targets then the worker’s safety is compromised. It is evident from the text that some of the workers had started sustaining injuries as a result of implementation of the incentives. Another suggestion by George, his fellow manager was that workers should be left to choose on whether to take the risk or lose their job. This also compromise their health and safety (Scott and Donald 12).
The best option for Conner is to still persist on the stand that workers safety should be considered since it is the responsibility of the managers. Even though the production may be affected and the target may not be reached within the set time, the worker’s safety and health should be a priority. Since he does not want to be at crossroads with his fellow managers, he can suggest to them that they consider safety first, then approach the US army to give them time to adjust and balance between safety and output. Within this grace period, they can look for more effective and efficient machinery to carry out the production and retain the workers to keep watch of the operations. This option may deem costly but in the long run, it will be sustainable (Scott and Donald 32).
In conclusion, in order to step up production without impacting negatively on the safety and health of workers, using newer production technology can be a solution. The technology will solve the need to hire more workers as well as enable the existing workers to work in shifts thus taking breaks and avoiding injuries due to exhaustion. The technology, if embraced should produce more units per time and can be employed throughout the day and night with the workers left to feed the raw materials as well as watch the operations in shifts. The workers will also get better pay due to increased output.
