Write 1 page with APA style on How Women Experience Battering. Through the ages, women’s role in society has been subservient to their male counterpart. They are not considered equal and their dominance is often accompanied by violence and abuse. Most pertinent are the issues that do not let women free themselves from the abusing partners within or outside the matrimonial bond. While religious and cultural paradigms put social and religious constraints on women to divorce, the women’s inability to come to terms with reality becomes the major obstacle in freeing them. Their belief that love and romance are everlasting and that marriage is sacred becomes the important element that gives them hope of better tomorrow with the abusing partner. At the same time, social ostracism, shame and sense of hopelessness discourages them to question the violence in the relationship.

Another critical issue and probably the key factor that continues to hound women is their lack of confidence in their ability to survive without their partners. They often submerge their identity in order to maintain social norms and therefore become economically and emotionally dependent on partners who abuse them. Moreover, Battered women often fail to perceive the abuse as an act that needs to be addressed urgently and therefore becomes victims of circumstances. The abuse is also so discordant with their expectations of love filled life that they refuse to acknowledge it as such (Ferraro & Johnson, 1983). This results in low self-esteem, depression, and apathy that dissuade them to rationalize the violence as such and take corrective measures. Indeed, often lonely future also becomes a crucial issue which does not let them take risks and remain in an abusive relationship.
