General Learning Outcome:
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to tell the size of an object.
Specific Learning Outcome:
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to classify if an object is small, medium or large.
Rationale (NYS Learning Standard):
Standard 3: Students will understand mathematics and become mathematically confident by communicating and reasoning mathematically, by applying mathematics in real-world settings, and by solving problems through the integrated study of number systems, geometry, algebra, data analysis, probability, and trigonometry.
Motivation:
The students in each group (Small, Medium, Large) should find the 6 objects on their list. When the activity is finished, each student should present the object he or she is holding to the class. He/she should say “A small book,” for example.
Instructional Procedure:
9:45 – Teacher gathers students. The teacher places 3 table markers (small, medium, large) on the table & places a lego block behind small, a building block behind medium and a book behind large. The teacher will say “A small lego block” and so on with other objects. Students should repeat after the teacher.
9:50 - Students are grouped into Small, Medium and Large. The teacher will give a list of objects to each group. Each list has 6 pictures of objects. The Small group has 6 pictures of 6 small objects. It is the same for the other groups. Students should complete the list.
10:10 – When they are finished, they should go to their seats and present their objects. “A small bag.” “A medium bag.” “A large bag.”
10:15 – Teacher will call a student’s name. Student should tell if his neighbor’s object is small, medium or large.
In-Class Assessment: Students should tell if his neighbor’s object is small, medium or large.
Homework: Students should cut-out a picture of an ant, a dog & an elephant and paste these on their notebooks. They should label the pictures small, medium, large. .
Materials: . lego block, building block, book
Small objects on the list: lego block, baby comb, ball, book, baby shoes, baby socks
Medium objects on the list: building block, regular comb, ball, book, kids’ shoes, kids’ socks
Large objects: brick, salon comb, ball, book, man’s shoes, socks Christmas decoration
