Learning can be defined as the process of acquiring new knowledge (Ellof & Ebersohn 2004).

This reflective report seeks to outline the writer’s experience with the different types of software used in the learning process. Learning with the aid of computers can be subdivided into two main categories namely. integrated learning systems (ILS) as well as integrated tutoring systems (ITS). ILS posits that the learning material is converged into one computer-based system which will give instructions to learners while it shows that there is an interaction between the learner and the computer throughout the learning process with the aid of using computers. Thus, MacDonald et al, (1979) identified four types of software: instructional, revelatory, conjectural and emancipatory. This depends on the nature and scope of the software and the way it is administered or used by the learner. This is based on the nature of learning where the software instructs the learner, how it provides the tools which support the learner and how the learner can make decisions about the mode and pace of his learning. The different software applications going to be discussed in this reflective report include the following: Microsoft Office particularly Excel and PowerPoint, MSN messenger, logo, Mind genius, First class, hot potatoes, and Scratch programming.

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is important in online and distance education and can also be useful in other educational contexts. Thus, First Class is a communication tool that can be harnessed to deliver educational material and provide the necessary learning tools to geographically dispersed students.&nbsp.
