However, patients with ASPD do not display all of these characteristics making it quite impossible to suggest a common mode of treatment for all. This paper seeks to explore the origin, history, diagnosis, and treatment of ASPD while throwing light on the contributing factors for the disorder.

Anti-social personality disorders must have been prevalent ever since man started to live in communities. However, one can trace back the modern concepts of ASPD to the early 19th century when terms such as ‘moral insanity,’ ‘psychopathic inferiority,’ ‘psychopathic state,’ and ‘personality disorder’ were employed by psychologists and clinical practitioners to refer to the disorder. While ‘moral insanity’ was initially used to refer to the disorder Koch replaced it with ‘psychopathic inferiority’ in 1891 and was later classified as ‘personality disorder’ by Kraepelin in 1905.

However, the modern delineations of ASPD have been postulated by Henderson (1939) when the author defined patients with ASPD as “individuals with ‘psychopathic states’ as those ‘who conform to a certain intellectual standard but who throughout their lives exhibit disorders of conduct of an antisocial or a social nature’” (NCCMH 15). Antisocial behaviors and aggressive acts were initially regarded as symptoms of ASPD. Unlike other diseases ASPD is regarded as a combination of behavioral, mental, psychological, social and criminal traits and as such insights from clinical psychology, psychosocial interventions, social learning theories, mental healthcare, and criminal justice system have been found to be useful for its treatment.
