Jake spends most of his time by going from bar to bar and drinks heavily at every bar.

Jake Barnes is the fundamental character, with a passionate love for Brett Ashley. He openly declares his love to Brett when he states that "I love you so much" (p. 61). In fact Jake begs Brett to be his and be with him. But Brett refuses and says that she would "tromper" (p.62). Tomper is a French word and it means "to commit adultery" (Neil Coffey, 2006). In reality Jake was wounded in a war which made him impotent because of which Brett was worried that he may not be able to satisfy her sexually.

Jake has a motivation and that is he feels that he should survive the rest of his life as a veteran soldier. All through the novel Jake and his emigrant friends talk nothing but only of drinks and drinking. They spend most of their time in Paris (Djos, p. 1). Actually Jake is very obsessive for liquor. Jake's friend compliment him by saying

Jake had been during the war, inflicted with some deficiencies in his physical masculinity which in turn makes him an impotent. But he never tries to reveal his anxieties straightaway. Jake reveals his insecurities to Gurko, an Italian general, adverting to the grimness of his surrender with his sad appreciation, "you... have given more than your life" (p. 39). Gurko further stresses Jake's expurgation by, "Burdened by a handicap that would crush most men, he bears it stoically" (p. 57). Thus the disability which Jake has stops him from having any kind of sexual relationship with Brett Ashley.

Jake Barnes is a lively character to some extent. Right through the story, Jake forever keeps Brett Ashley in company as and when she needs it. He does this to strengthen his relationship with Brett Ashley. But, nothing happens and as an alternative Brett engages into an intimacy with Pedro Romero who is a handsome bullfighter and Jake's friend. Eventually Jake substantiates something very significant about Brett. As Brett asks Jake "we could have had such a damned time together", Jake replies "isn't it pretty to think so" (p. 251).

Brett Ashley:

Brett Ashley is a round character. She is very beautiful and her beauty seems to appeal everybody whom she happens to meet. She also has the ability of not committing herself to a single man. She is a character who prefers freedom in whatever she does and with whoever she is. But her freedom does not give her happiness. She always grumbles to Jake about her life being miserable. She even goes to the extent of saying that her life is

rudderless and disappointing. Jake remarks about Brett as "She can't go anywhere alone" (p. 67). She does not commit to a single man but she is not comfortable being by herself. Finally, Brett understands that it would have been healthier if she would have spent more time with Jake instead (p. 251).

Robert Cohn and Pedro Romero:

Robert Cohn and Pedro Romero are friends of Jake. Pedro Romero is a bullfighter and both of them are against Jake's accomplishments which he is trying to achieve.

Jake's friends Robert Cohn and Pedro Romero have some kind of relationship with Brett. Robert is smitten by Brett and he discovers her to be very attractive.
