Research by Gene Van Tassell indicates that effective classroom management and organization are very essential in determining the expectations, procedures, and behavior patterns of a student that will persist throughout the school years. Much of the social interaction and instruction that takes place when students open schools can be traced indirectly or directly to the manner in which teachers initially establish social and instructional systems during the first days of the term. In most cases, teachers do not want to give much autonomy to their students because they think that if students are given much autonomy, they will misuse the opportunity and therefore compromise quality of education since they will not be willing to learn what teacher teaches them. Educational administrators often view teacher’s classroom control as a measurement of quality of teacher. The effective way and better way of management style is the one where there is autonomy and control. Different theories have been used to explain how students learn in school. If most obstacles or barriers to their learning were decreased, then students will be intrinsically motivated to learn. In this manner, the work of the teachers is to facilitate and assist eliminate such barrier. In this case, the teacher is obligated to assume the responsibility of motivating students. According to the author of this article, classroom discipline is only attained when there exist teacher’s control of students in class. In this regard, educators view the control by teachers as a significant method in ensuring classroom management. For teachers to effectively manage their classroom or instill classroom discipline, it is important for them to understand the developmental progress of children. Specifically, comprehending children development and growth as well as matters to do with cognitive and cultural diversity are the fundamental way of laying foundation for effective learning. Gene Van Tassell suggests that for psychological concern, control is very important in an individual’s life in that is natural for human beings to want to control their lives. Concerning school situation, control is done to ensure that there is discipline in that most schools interpret the word control with discipline. Majority of students do not know how to control their behavior. This is reflected in situations whereby children feel frustrated by their inability to cope with daily tribulations that they face in life. As states in the article, teachers do not receive training in the use of effective discipline methods in class. Despite the fact that other methods are applied in instilling discipline, teachers often use assertive discipline. In recent years, there have been debates concerning the relationship between performance and self-esteem by children in education. It can be argued from a logical point of view that there exist positive correlation between self-esteem and achievement but critics have raised questions whether this correlation exists. In order to increase self-esteem among students, it is prudent to note that battering of self-esteem does not lead to high performance but it instead it demoralizes students. It has been noted that those students who perform poorly, have discipline problems in schools.
