The poem is generally considered as the initial great literary work. The Gilgamesh history is literary illustrated through the five Sumerian poems concerning ‘Bilgamesh’ the king of Uruk. The independent stories were integrated to form the literary work, The Epic of Gilgamesh. The initial combined versions of the epic called “Old Babylonian” are dated 18th century BC. Just a few tablets of the literary work have survived. The later epic versions are dated between the 13th and th1 10th centuries BC, and are referred to as “He who Sees the Unknown” in the present context. An estimated two thirds of the twelve-tablet literary work has been found. The suitable copies were found in a 17th century library ruins. The library is believed to have belonged to Assyrian king Ashurbanipal.
The first half part of the literary work discusses the relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Gilgamesh was the king of Uruk, while Enkidu was a wild man who was developed by the gods to minimize his oppression of the residents of Uruk. The people from Uruk were very pessimistic concerning the leadership style of Gilgamesh. This is because of the hardship that they suffered during this reigning period.
