Model Minority Resistance

Familiarize yourself with the case of Korematsu v. United States (1984) and Executive Order 9066.

In an effort to avoid being forced into an internment camp, Fred Korematsu, a 23-year-old who was a Japanese–American citizen, had plastic surgery on his eyes to change his appearance and told people that he was of Spanish and Hawaiian descent. He changed his name to Clyde. Fred did all of this because he did not want to comply with Executive Order 9066 , which stated that he must leave his home and job. Fred’s parents, however, abandoned their home and their flower nursery business to prepare to report to a camp.

Address the following:

  • What is the constitutional issue being challenged in Korematsu v. United States ? Explain.
  • How does Korematsu’s behavior go against the stereotype of the model minority?
  • In 1990, thousands of Japanese Americans affected by Executive Order 9066 received compensation or reparations checks of $20,000. How would you structure a modern policy around compensating American citizens whose constitutional rights were violated? Would it include compensation?
