Write a 3 page essay on Analysis of Jihad vs. McWorld Article Written by Benjamin Barber.

If Jihad threatens the physical security and instills fear and terror among people, McWorld bulldozes all pretenses of national sovereignty and individual rights of citizens in its quest for “one market under God”. Hence, according to Barber, the world, on the eve of the 21st century is a dangerous place wherein a Kafkaesque nightmare, tribalism and modernism extract a heavy price at the same time from the citizens of the world (Barber).

The evidence presented by Barber for McWorld are the four imperatives (market, resource, information technology and ecological) which when put into practice subsidizes the lifestyles of the rich and widens the already yawning gap between the rich and the poor. On the other hand, the forces of Jihad threaten the very existence of people as events in the Balkans and elsewhere (presented as evidence by Barber) show. Hence, the overriding message of the article is that the world and its people are better off without either of these two forces (Barber). It is indeed the case that political scientists must care about the points made by Barber as subsequent events (the article was written in 1992) like the 911 terrorist attacks and the ongoing global economic crisis have proved the validity of Barber’s contentions. Hence, not only is the article not correct and Barber been proved right over and again, there is an urgent message for all intellectuals to shun both the countervailing forces and instead support liberal and humanistic values that do not preach hatred and at the same time do not subsume individuality in pursuit of profits.

If one were to make a reasonable argument against the conclusions of the article, it would be to point out that in some countries like India and China, the coexistence of religious fundamentalism and market-led growth has been largely a positive one.
