In this book, the author wrote about her own journey to discovery and that of others in distinct kind of growing old. The author discovered men and women turning into their sixties and seventies discovering new talents and possibilities of intimacy and purpose in life (Friedan 23).

The main theme in this book is that age is seen as deterioration from youth. This assumption is entrenched throughout professional society and community. In her arguments, she finds out that older people have believed this assumption to be true and real having all fallen into deterioration model of age (Friedan 67). The author aims at challenging this perception of old age citing out injustice together with probable solutions usually through political and social change. The author discusses variety of practical questions that face older Americans. For instance, how can they tackle physical disabilities? What purpose does intimacy serve in the lives of older people?
