This paper focuses on the connection between human agency and historical forces in shaping the human society. The essay focuses on contributions of Nelson Mandela, who acted against strong forces from the South African government and institutions, which were mainly controlled by the White minority in the government. He, however, became successful in changing the society for the greater good. His social and political contributions have become important events in the history of his society and all over the world as well.

Nelson Mandela’s life story is a unique example for how a single individual can become a symbol of a broad social movement. The two main social and political achievements of Nelson Mandela that standout from his many contributions in the society include his fight against apartheid and the establishment of a unified government. Mandela’s most significant contribution in the society is the fight against apartheid (Duiker, 2014). He was able to lead a revolution movement, despite spending most of his life imprisoned. The fact that he was able to emerge as a symbol of the fight against segregation while still in prison is a testament for his strength of will and desires to change his society. He sacrificed his personal freedom for the benefit of the wider society of South Africa. He turned down offers for release from jail until South Africans would attain independence.

Mandela was able to play a role in the fight against apartheid through the African National Congress, the movement he formed alongside other leaders. He constantly played the role of the leader of the movement even during his 27 years in prison.
