Since she was a young girl, she seemed excellent, affectionate, obedient, and truthful. his father never imagined her becoming disobedient even a minute. Then comes the suitor, Morris Townsend, who was very handsome, friendly, and talkative. In her twenties and her thirty-thousand dollars income, her father felt that the suitor was just, but a fortune hunter and the daughter were making a wrong choice. Dr. Sloper refuses to give consent to the marriage of her daughter to Townsend. Dr. Sloper being a scientist only sees life through his eyes of reason. He is proud and confident of his science being able to judge human nature. His decision is always final as in his field of medicine. He saw other people as less intellectual. first, he took her daughter as unwise and overruled her decision of getting married to Townsend. His pride and stubbornness make the daughter furious and resistant to his quest. Dr. Sloper if given a choice to make could have chosen a brilliant and beautiful girl in replacement to Catherine whom he felt not as good for him as a daughter. He as a father keeps on condemning the girl and undermines her abilities. he totally lowers the girls’ self-esteem with his cynical remarks. Catherine grew up very dull due to her father’s nagging. she was never given a chance to air out her opinion on any situation. She was named stolid due to her shyness. she always seemed painfully shy and uncomfortable. People failed to understand her and mistook her for being insensible.
