Write a short essay (roughly 1000 words) on one of the suggested topics. 

Instructions:

• Use the popular media to identify information relevant to the topic.
• Students are encouraged but not restricted to use the SFC Library to research information.
• In one paragraph, explain how you selected the source(s) of information.
• Cite your sources properly.

Suggested topics. Please choose one. 

1. Identify an example of the Ad Hominem fallacy in the media. Explain which version of the fallacy you have detected. 
2. Identify example(s) of the Strawman fallacy in the media. Explain the risk that the fallacy brings to a proponent of such an argument. Identify an alternative argument on the same issue that does not commit the Strawman fallacy.  
3. Identify a controversial issue in the media with an unclear placement of the burden of proof. Evaluate the available evidence and explain the importance of determining who should bear the burden of proof. 
4. Provide an example of appeal to ignorance used in the mass media. Explain the nature of the fallacy. Evaluate the evidence. How can the fallacy be avoided?
