Write an essay in which you address the question of whether Good Fellas still “works” for contemporary audiences.  Please come up with no fewer than six specific reasons why you believe this film does or does not appeal to modern viewers. Each reason should be addressed in its own paragraph. Other requirements:

The essay should have an introductory paragraph in which you introduce the film by identifying the title, director, and year produced and explaining briefly what the movie is about. The introduction should culminate with a claim statement that asserts your answer to the question: "Does this film "work for a modern audience?"

  • Your body paragraphs should be anchored by clear, direct topic sentences that present distinct reasons. Your evidence for those reasons should include both logical explanations for your reasons and evidence from the film.
  • At least three of those reasons should be related to film form—editing, lighting, cinematography, or other cinematic techniques.
  • At least one reasons should be related to acting performance.
  • Your essay should reference at least two “modern” (post-2000 films) in the course of establishing whether and why the film works or doesn’t. These can be from the class or from a film you’ve watched outside the class.
  • Your conclusion should briefly re-state the points you made in the essay OR briefly compare the film to a contemporary movie.

Your body paragraphs should…

  • Have direct, concise topic sentences that present the distinct idea that will provide the focus for that paragraph. Each paragraph should include evidence drawn from directly from scenes in the film.
  • Be purposeful—that is, they should be focused on one thing: a specific technique employed by the filmmaker.
  • Make use of details and evidence from the films.
  • Avoid unnecessary information.
  • Avoid plot summary.
  • Avoid using transitions at the end of paragraphs, which is just weird. In general, don’t go to great lengths to develop sophisticated transitions from one paragraph to the next. This is assignment doesn’t really require it.
