(1) Read the slide series I uploaded in the Files section on Free Will. List and describe, in three paragraphs total, the three theories—hard determinism, soft determinism, and libertarianism— of free will. Which do you think is likeliest to be right? Why? (3 Paragraphs)

(2) Choose an ethical issue being discussed in society. You don’t have to pick any of these, but just to give you examples: abortion, climate change, euthanasia, capital punishment, eating meat, immigration, etc. Once you’ve chosen an issue you want to write about, give me one reason for it and one reason against it. Basically, I want you to give a good case on both sides of the issue. Then tell me your position. (3 Paragraphs)

(3) Choose another ethical issue being discussed in society.

(4) In Western political philosophy, two values have been central ideals: liberty and equality. Sometimes, they bump into each other. If I want to give as much liberty as possible to each inhabitant, I will have to accept inequalities that arise. But if I want to make a society as equal as possible, I might have to impose certain restraints on some people’s liberty. Which of the two values do you think is more important for society, if you had to choose one, and why? (2 Paragraphs)
