Find out more about ethnocentrism and xenophobia.  Then look for examples of ethnocentrism and xenophobia from past and present events.Online Newspapers and magazines are good sources for current examples.

To complete research, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS using information from your sources, submit your notes AND an annotated bibliography.  You can only earn full credit if you include a completed annotated bibliography. 

Research Questions:

  1. Define ethnocentrism and xenophobia.  How are they different and/or similar?
  2. From your research, give a brief (1 paragraph) summary of an example of ethnocentrism AND give a brief (1 paragraph) summary of an example of xenophobia.
  3. Is the traditional distrust or fear of immigrants or foreigners (xenophobia) found today? Where and in what form?  (list places, cultures, and examples in your notes)
  4. What examples can you cite to support your answer? ( Consider the controversy regarding France's ban on Islamic headscarves that eventually was repealed, large crucifixes and all yarmulkes in her public schools, Feb. 2004).
  5. Explain why and how these kinds of conflicts continue to exist.
  6. Are there some possible solutions to this persistent problem? If so, what are they?
  7. What can individuals like yourself do to help alleviate the problems of xenophobia and/or ethnocentrism?
