This study aims to examine the relationship between perceived social support and academic performance among undergraduate students at a moderately sized Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The results will inform strategies for improving student outcomes through targeted support interventions.

• Research Questions and Hypotheses

Research Question:

Is there a significant relationship between social support and academic performance in college students?

• Participants

Sample Size: 50 undergraduate students

Sampling Method: Convenience sampling

Demographic Composition:

• 50% male (n = 25), 50% female (n = 25)
• Ages 18–25
• Full-time undergraduate enrollment at the university

Inclusion Criteria:

• Full-time undergraduate student
• Age 18–25
• Able to provide informed consent

Exclusion Criteria:

• Graduate or part-time students
• Incomplete survey responses

• Procedures

1. Recruitment: Participants will be recruited through campus-wide emails, flyers in academic buildings, and in-class announcements.
2. Informed Consent: All participants will review and electronically sign an informed consent form before beginning the survey.
3. Survey Administration: Participants will complete the survey online through Qualtrics. The survey will include:

• The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS)
• An Academic Performance Questionnaire

1. Time Commitment: The full survey will take approximately 10–15 minutes to complete.

• Instruments

Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS):

• 12-item scale measuring perceived support from three sources: family, friends, and significant other
• Each item is rated on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Very Strongly Disagree to 7 = Very Strongly Agree)
• High internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = .85–.91)

Sample Items from the MSPSS:

• “My family really tries to help me.”
• “I can count on my friends when things go wrong.”
• “There is a special person who is around when I am in need.”
• “I get the emotional help and support I need from my family.”
• “I can talk about my problems with my friends.”
• “There is a special person in my life who cares about my feelings.”

Subscale scores for Family, Friends, and Significant Other support will be calculated in addition to a total score.

Academic Performance Questionnaire:
