Each entry of your Reading Journal should provide: 

a)  A full citation of the excerpt, including the name of the author, year of publication, title, place of publication.  A citation guide is available on Brightspace to help you. Many citations are also included directly on the weekly slides. 

b)  The main point or central message of the piece in your own words, i.e. the theoretical question that the piece is trying to answer and the theory or theoretical perspective that has been proposed as the answer to the question; 

c)  The historical context, e.g. you can use the date of publication to help you locate the piece historically in terms of what was happening in the society during the time that the author was writing. Do some cursory research on the historical context of the piece using the links on the slides. Use your class lecture notes because we discuss the historical context in class. 

d)  How the author supports their argument or theory; and 

e) Citations and references for any external sources that are used in your journal entry. It is not required or necessary to use outside sources to write your journal entries. However, if you do use external sources, you MUST cite them. This includes any use of AI.
