QUESTION

You're going to tell the story of a motor neuron at rest that transmits a signal to a skeletal muscle cell.

You’re going to tell the story of a motor neuron at rest that transmits a signal to a skeletal muscle cell.

(1) Start by describing the resting membrane potential of the motor neuron including its amount in millivolts.  Describe how that resting potential is maintained – which ions are where and what is going on.

(1) Describe the graded potential in that motor neuron, including every step along the dendrite / cell body until the membrane change reaches the part of the neuron where an action potential “decision” is made

(2) Describe the action potential of that motor neuron.  Include every step, where on the neuron the threshold must be met, the amount of the threshold in millivolts, direction of movement of which ions, the peak amount of millivolts, and what happens as the neuron recovers from the action potential.

(3) Finally, describe synaptic transmission from the end of that motor neuron onto a skeletal muscle cell – which neurotransmitter, how it leaves the motor neuron, what it binds to on the muscle cell, what happens next to both the motor neuron and the sarcolemma (cell membrane) of the muscle cell.

The action potential has several stages.1. Depolarization: A stimulus starts the depolarization of the membrane. Depolarization, also referred to as the "upswing," is caused when...
