You will compose a Results and a Discussion section for the Gram Staining section of Unit 6. Your results section should include a figure to show your Gram stain results, a figure legend, and a written description of your results. Your discussion section should discuss your results and discuss how these results agree or disagree with your predictions/hypotheses. For example "The cells that turned violet from the Grain stain procedure are considered Gram positive because they contain a thick peptidoglycan wall".
Remember:
Results
Written Results:
- Provide a summary of the data or describe trends in the data
- Provide a written description of your data, include quantitative results from all experiments (even those that do not support your hypothesis)
- Do NOT include any discussions or conclusions
- Refer your reader to your graphic/visual representation of your data
example: As the dose of caffeine increased, the average heart rate of the mice increased (Figure 1).
Graphic Results:
- Include either a graph or table (pick one) for EACH experiment with the following elements:
- Description that summarizes the graph (this goes at the bottom of the graph or at the top of the table)
- Figure/Table number
- Legend, if needed
- Labeled axes, or columns/rows
Discussion
- Re-state expected findings
- Compare your results with what your expected/predicted results
- Explain unexpected/expected results by linking this to general biological principles
- Evaluate your hypotheses and identify whether or not your results support or reject your hypotheses
NOTE: Bacteria sample stained- E-coli, staphylococci, bacilli.
