You will prepare and submit a term paper on Story Response. Your paper should be a minimum of 250 words in length. Response Dee and Maggie are very different from each other both in looks and in personality. Maggie is heavier than Dee. Her hair is not as nice as Dee’s. Dee has a fuller figure than Maggie. Dee is confidant while Maggie is under the influence of inferiority complex because of her burn scars. The unfortunate incident of fire outbreak in their home left Maggie self-conscious ever since. “She has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since the fire that burned the other house to the ground” (Walker). Dee is more stylish and aware of the latest trends of fashion than Maggie. Dee is an outgoing type of girl whereas Maggie is a stay-at-home kind. Dee is brighter than Maggie.

Mama favors Maggie more than Dee because of several reasons. First, mama knows that Maggie has been through a traumatic experience of burning in the fire outbreak and has had both physical and emotional scars ever since whereas Dee has never had any of those problems. Maggie has more awareness of the family’s African American heritage as compared to Dee and is easier to deal with than Dee. Mama’s favoritism for Maggie openly reflects when she tries to save the quilts for Maggie even when Dee insists upon getting them. Mama and Maggie share a stronger and better bond of mother and daughter than the bond between Mama and Dee. Mama and Maggie are also connected more strongly to their heritage as compared to Dee.
