Use the readings for this week to engage with the concept of "labeling theory" to analyze how the label of "criminal" functions at both the micro (individual) level and macro (systemic) level of society. Think about how criminalization may impact the everyday lives of certain folks as in the article "Stealing a bag of Potato Chips" and how it functions to expand systems of incarceration as in the chapters from "The New Jim Crow". What is the impact and effect of the "criminal" label? * Note that labeling theory is explained in the textbook chapter as well as utilized by Alexander in The New Jim Crow and inferred in the article "Stealing a bag of Potato Chips." Be sure you are using these definitions in your response. Response should be at least 1 and 1/2 pages double spaced (About 350 words)

Additional notes from the profesor.
This week we will be looking at the overall concept of deviance but more specifically questions of crime and ways in which crime is understood sociologically. The majority of our class will be spent discussing chapters from "The New Jim Crow" which discusses the expansion of mass incarceration. This will allow us to tie questions of mass incarceration to an understanding of structural racism as well. In looking at the material for this week:
- Skim the textbook chapter linked for overall definitions of crime, deviance, and social control
- Read the short article "Stealing a bag of potatoe chips" to reflect on ideas of labeling theory
- Mostly for this week concentrate on the Intro and Chapter 1 from The New Jim Crow.
