  Part 1:

  • Read a concise version of what run-on sentences are, and how to recognize and fix them, available here:http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/fragments-and-run-ons/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
  • On this website, you'll see a section labeled "Finding Run-Ons" near the bottom of the page.  I think this is an excellent technique, and it will be useful practice for this challenge.
  • Identify 5 sentences from your own essay that you feel might be run-on sentences.   These do not have to be consecutive sentences in your essay.
  • Using the guidance in the "Finding Run-Ons" segment of the website, turn each of those 5 sentences into either a yes/no question or a tag question.  Write each of the 5 sentences into the same document.
  • For each sentence, identify based on this exercise whether you feel it is or is not a run-on sentence.  If it is a run-on sentence, include a revised version that fixes the problem.
  • Your submission must use correct SPELLING, GRAMMAR, and PUNCTUATION!
  • Late work policy: note the due date/time of the assignment. You will NOT earn any credit for late work (grade of 0% is assigned if you respond to either or both parts after the specified due date/time).

Sample Sentences

Sample:

1) Some moms are single moms, some are married, some are working, and some stay at home and some have adopted children, while others may even be same sex mothers.

Are some moms single moms, some married, some working, some stay at home, some have adopted children, while others may even be same sex mothers?

I feel this sentence is not a run-on, because the question form makes sense.

2)Though each of these women leads individual and unique lives, what they all have in common is motherhood.

Though each of these women leads individual and unique lives, what they all have in common is motherhood, isn't it?

I feel this sentence is not a run-on, because the question form makes sense.

3) When I was younger I remember single mothers being looked down on, it was thought that they made bad decisions and had created a rough life for their child.

When I was younger I remember single mothers being looked down on, didn't I?  It was thought that they made bad decisions and had created a rough life for their child, wasn't it?

This sentence is a run-on sentence, because more than one question was required to make it make sense.  To fix it, I could split this into two sentences: When I was younger I remember single mothers being looked down on.  It was thought that they made bad decisions and had created a rough life for their child.

4) I think perceptions today are different than they were 20 years ago as single mothers account for 40% of new births in the U.S. (Ravitz).

Don't I think that perceptions today are different than they were 20 years ago, as single mothers account for 40% of new births in the U.S. (Ravitz)?

I feel this sentence is not a run-on, because the question form makes sense.

5) Though critics will continue to argue what this means for the children and for society as a whole, one thing is clear cultural differences and stigmas have made being a single mom acceptable in today’s world.

Though critics will continue to argue what this means for the children and for society as a whole, one thing is clear, isn't it?  Cultural differences and stigmas have made being a single mom acceptable in today's world, haven't they?

This sentence is a run-on sentence, because more than one question was required to make it make sense.  To fix it, I could connect the two sentences with a semicolon.  Though critics will continue to argue what this means for the children and for society as a whole, one thing is clear; cultural differences and stigmas have made being a single mom acceptable in today's world.
