-Utilize one of the two novels (‘A Tree Grows in Brooklyn’ and ‘The Catcher in the Rye’), and one of the three shorter pieces (‘Exterior Street’, ‘Falling Man’ and ‘The Colossus of New York’) read for this class, and write a 5-6 page paper comparing the two chosen works and their unique takes on NYC. Describe and compare/contrast themes discussed in both pieces you choose and write about how NYC is described differently in the two pieces. If writing about two pieces in different time periods, discuss ways in which NYC has changed. This paper should exhibit a culmination of work covered in this course, and themes discussed in class. A general understanding of the ways in which New York City has evolved should be demonstrated. Be sure to bring in your own unique thoughts and experiences. There is no need to use outside resources for this paper, but if you do, they MUST be cited appropriately in a ‘References’ page. The texts read in class do not need to be cited, only referred to by name in the paper, with proper page citations for all utilized quotes. Papers will be graded based on 3 components (Composition – 6 points, Thematic Understanding – 8 points, Utilization of Unique Ideas – 6 points = 20 total points).
