1.Think about your early years of education (elementary through high school) and identify that which influenced and/or impacted you. Consider your family life, friendships (or lack of), specific classrooms, teaching styles, teachers, other students, etc. What stuck with you and what have you let go? Do early experiences “build character” or perhaps linger?  At least 100 words

          a. Have you ever inspired one of your teachers? Why is it important for teachers to find inspiration from students? Much of the   time, discussions commonly center on teachers inspiring students, but what about the flipside of this coin? Does it need to be a two-way street?  At least 75 words

          b. To further expand on our M1 main discussion topic of ‘building character’, you can read the article linked below that details 7 tips for building character in students. 2.    We have all heard about the girl who wants to join the wrestling team and the boy who wants an Easy Bake Oven. Think about some of your earliest experiences with gender. Consider at school, extracurricular activities, your parents, your friends, etc. Discuss gender roles, stereotypes, myths, and/or controls in society that existed then and you see exist today. Do you feel that males or females have more or less “controls” placed on them by society? Is it fair? Do you believe that boys and girls/men and women should stick to the qualities, interests, etc., that society deems appropriate for their gender? At least 100 words

         a.       What do Bolivia, Belgium, Burkina Faso, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Kenya, Malawi,    Nigeria, Scotland, South Africa, the United States and Vietnam all have in common?

The pervasive idea is that girls are vulnerable and that boys are strong and independent.

In a set of studies published Wednesday in the Journal of Adolescent Health, the researchers concluded that between the ages of 10 and 14, children begin to fully embrace and internalize the belief that girls and boys are intrinsically different — and should act accordingly.

To expand on our M2 main discussion topic of ‘gender’, you can read the article linked below that details how gender norms can harm kids everywhere. What are the main takeaways from this article? What can be said about gender norms when examined internationally? Why is it important to provide education on this issue to children?

b.      “Gender policing, the act of imposing or enforcing gender roles based on an individual’s perceived sex. This type of behavior can range from banal actions, like a confused look on the subway, to more insidious behavior like getting thrown out of a gendered public restroom or fitting room.” – Rachel Tutera

To further expand on our M2 main discussion topic of ‘gender norms’, you can read the article linked below that discusses when enforcing gender norms turns violent. “Despite their growing visibility, transgender and gender non-conforming people still face danger in their daily lives.”.

Can anyone share an experience or interaction with a transgender or non-conforming person? Or, how is this topic perceived by those around you in your daily life? Does it even come up at all, is it on your radar, or are you distant from it in your own day-to-day interactions?

3.    Of course, we can laugh when our parents and grandparents (or even we) reflect on the “good ol' days” when life was simple and children played in the yard, made fun out of anything they could find, and spent minimal time in front of the “boob tube” and even less playing video games. But even if television, the media, film, computers/internet, and video games aren’t necessarily bad for children and teens, give some thought to what they are missing out on by spending so much time with these everyday “outlets.” What might they be doing instead and what might those other activities do for their mental, emotional, and physical health? Have we lost touch with human interaction/communication on some level? Have we come so far that it is too late to get some of that back?
